Resource Overallocation

Hi,

Is it possible overallocate a resource, when the resource
spends more than planned effort ? Ideally, the resources
would put in extra hours to complete a task on schedule
but we need to captute the extra effort with pushing the
schedule.

Hi Srriam,

Yes. First, you should use the "Fixed Duration" task type in MSP Client.
This way, no matter how much extra work effort is added, the duration will
not change (a PM can still manually adjust). This is done by selecting the
appropriate tasks (or the entire project, if you wish) and going to the
"Project->Task Information" menu items. You can then modify the "Task Type"
to "Fixed Duration". If you want to use this feature with any new tasks you
create, make sure you change this in the "Tools->Options->Schedule" tab.

Next, you will need to decide where the update is being made. If updates
are made within MSP Client by the Project Manager, you can just change the
"Actual Work" for each resource without modifying the duration (i.e. Using
the "Resource Usage" view, or something similar).

If resources will be providing updates via PWA, you are all set and the
"Fixed Duration" task type will prevent a change to the duration. However,
you might decide to modify the total number of hours a person can enter for
the entire day. You can do this by logging in to PWA as a user with
administrative priveleges, going to the "Admin->Customize Project Web
Access->Tracking Settings" links and modifying the "Maximum number of hours
that can be entered per day for a single task" option.

Hope this helps,

-Bill
