Resource Plan & View Availability

I want to reserve my resources time without assigning to any specific task.
I think I would use a Resource Plan to do this.

I created an Activity Plan and created a Resource Plan within it. I added
my resource to the Resource Plan and committed 8hrs a day for all of this
month. I published the Activity Plan and the Resource Plan. Now in the
Resource Center I select my resource and click on View Assignments. Not
suprisingly I see no assignments for my resource. But when I click on the
View Availability my resources shows full available. This surprises me
because I thought my actions would show my resources with no availability for
this month.

What am I doing wrong?

On the View Availability page, make sure that you click the Settings button
and then click the View Options item. In the View Options section at the
top of the page, make sure you selected this month as the date range. You
should see your resource listed on the right. Assuming so, look at the
Details grid at the bottom. Do you see the Activity Plan listed there? If
not, then is there a possibility you set the Resource to Proposed rather
than Committed in the Resource Plan? You can select the "Include proposed
bookings" option in the View Options pane and then click the Apply button to
see if the Resource Plan and Work hours show up.

Beyond this, are you absolutely certain you booked the resource at 8 hours
each day in the Resource Plan? And are you certain you actually published
the Resource Plan? What steps did you use to actually create the Resource
Plan? Let us know what you find.

Team Builder Lite is a feature that allows authorized users in Project Web
Access to propose resource assignments in projects. Assigning a resource as a
proposed resource allows organizations to track potential resource
assignments for projects that are still in the proposal phase. Since a
proposed resource is in a reserved state, it can be used to identify a
resource that is not actually committed to working on the project.

I am not sure what you want it to do is what it was designed to do. Actually
the opposite, you propose a resource and it does not affect availability,
only when you book the resource as committed does it affect availability
unless you select to include proposed bookings when determining availability
and total assigned work to indicate whether proposed assignments should be
considered when filtering for availability and work using Build Team. This
option determines whether a resource will be considered for substitution on a
specific assignment by the Substitution Wizard.

In Project Professional, project managers can use proposed resources and
assign them to tasks in the same way as any other resource would be assigned
to a task. When a proposed resource is assigned in Project Professional, the
assignment is exactly the same as another resource assignment.

Under Build Team, select resources in the Filtered Enterprise Resources and
Resources in the project list boxes. Resources shown in the Resources in the
project list box are either Committed or Proposed. To change the resource’s
booking type, click the Change Booking Type button.

The key here is I don't think it affects Resource Center and Resource
Availability Views, it only affects seeing Resource Availability within Build
Team.

Anybody correct please, I did not use this much at all in 2003.

Dale, I figured it out (with the help of your PjS 70-633 book, page 105). I
had to change the way the Resourse Plan calculated resource utilization --
from Project Plan to Resource Plan.
