when I go to assign a resource type, it gives me "work" and "materials" is

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup
Equipment is a work resource like a human in that you assign work
(machine-hours?) to it. A material resource is of the kind that you have a
limited quantity that you gradually use up. So treat equipment as if they
were human.
