Resource Work Completed PWA

Ryan

I'm using Project 2002 Server and 2002 Professional.

I'm a little confused with how a resource is suppose to keep their project
manager updated on work complete using PWA. When in Timesheet view, the
only editable fields are % work complete and remaining work. If a resource
wants to report that they're 50% done with a task, he/she can update the %
work complete field and actual hours worked and remaining duration are
automatically calculated based on the initial time estimate. But what if
the task took half as long as expected? % work complete and actual work
seem to be linked together so you cannot change the values to something like
50% complete in 2 hours (if the task was estimated to take 8 hours).

Also, it seems to me that it would make more sense for resources to update
their hourly timesheet (4 hours working on task1 today, 4 hours on task2,
etc), but these fields are all locked out (greyed). Did I set a permission
incorrectly? The account I am testing with is mine, and I have full
administrative permissions set up.

The most logical choice to me would be to have the resources update their %
work complete as well as hourly timesheet on a daily or weekly basis, but
this does not seem possible. Am I taking the wrong approach to the problem?

Thanks for any advice.

Given your tracking needs, I believe that using the % Work Complete method
of tracking that you are using is not appropriate for your organization.
Instead, I would recommend that you select the "Hours of work done per day
or per week" method. To do this, complete the following steps:

1. Log into PWA with administrator permissions
2. Click the Admin menu
3. Click the Customize Project Web Access link
4. In the first section, select the "Hours of work done per day or per
week" option
5. In the Lock down defaults section, select the "Force project managers to
use..." option, if appropriate for your situation
6. In the Time period settings section, select the "Resources should report
their hours worked every day" option
7. Click the Save Changes button

Once you have done so, you will need to ask each of your project managers to
open EVERY one of their projects and click Collaborate - Publish - Republish
Assignments. Doing so will "push" the new method of tracking to each user's
timesheet for every task in every project. Do know, however, that any tasks
that have actual progress entered using the % Work Complete method WILL NOT
be changed, and will have to continue using this method until the task is
complete. Hope this helps.
