Response to a meeting request doesn't return to sender

If I get an email in Outlook 2003 about a meeting and I respond to it. This
response never arrives in the sender's email. We are using Exchange server
2003 and Outlook 2003 on a LAN. What am I missing?

Does the sender see the meeting item updated showing that you accepted? (or
declined?)
