Restart Numbering in a Table

Version: 2000 9.03821 SR-1
OS: Win 2K Pro

Can anyone suggest a way to restart numbering when
embedded in a table. I have multiple tables, each
containing a numbering format. When I use the numbering
format in subsequent tables, it continues the numbering
from the prior table. I have tried 'Select Text->Right-
click->Select Bullets & Numbering->Select Restart
Numbering, however Restart Numbering and Continue Previuos
List are greyed-out and cannot be selected.

Appreciate any suggestions...

You need to set this up as an outline list. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html You'll need
to include a higher-level style that will be used to restart the numbering.
That style does not need to be numbered, just some style that will always
intervene between two numbered lists.

Brian - Try putting in a LISTNUM field in the first cell of each table
except the first, like so:

{ LISTNUM \S 1 }

Make sure there's no space between \S.

If there are no other numbered styles between the tables, this should
work.

I have tried this step-by-step using the instructions that
were provided. I have successfully done this before for
an outline, however it did not work in this instance. I
would simply like to restart the numbering sequence
whenever a new Heading 1 style is inserted. My Heading 1
style has no number. I have a number 1. as my Heading 2
and a letter 'a' for my Heading 3. The rest of the levels
I omitted the numbering, as I am not using them. However,
I did go through each one and link them to the previous
level.

When I tried to do an outline style, none of the previous
styles even changed. I would mdoify all of the Heading
styles 1-9 and select apply and it would not change the
styles. I have also tried the {LISTNUM "Name" \s 0} field
function to restart the list numbering to 0 at the end of
the list with no success. I don't know if I'm doing
something wrong or what. Is this syntax correct for the
LISTNUM field code? Please advise...

Hi Brian

I suspect the step that may have gone wrong is that you must act as if
Heading 1 was numbered (that is, you set up the numbering from that style,
and link it to the top level of the numbering scheme). Just don't give it a
number in its own number format.

For level two of the list, set up the number format for 1. etc., link to
Heading 2, and make sure it is set to restart on level 1.

If this wasn't it (you did this and it still isn't working) then you may
need to reset the paragraphs to style (Ctrl-Q) - numbering has a nasty habit
of turning into 'direct formatting', which is then is not affected by the
style change.

You shouldn't need a LISTNUM for this, and a named LISTNUM may not stay
pointing to the style-linked list template, so get rid of those altogether.

remember to link each numbering level you were using to the corresponding
style?

Apologies, Brian, for giving you the wrong info. Yes, the syntax is
wrong for both your LISTNUM and the one I posted:

{ LISTNUM "Name" \S 0 }
{ LISTNUM \S 1 }

What's wrong is, when the field is substituting for *outline-numbered*
styles, which I overlooked, it needs a level switch, for example . . .

{ LISTNUM \L 2 \S 1 }

.. . . where Heading 2 is being displayed starting at number 1.

You don't need the "Name" in the field unless other numbered styles
intervene between your tables.

You probably won't be using the LISTNUM method for your tables anyway,
but I wanted to answer your question about the syntax in case you use
it in the future. - Bruce

Yes, I did this, if by linking you mean where the 'Link
Level to Style' drop down is, selecting the corresponding
style. The instructions I followed stated to link the
level to the current style i.e. If I am working on Heading
2, I select Heading 2 from this drop down. Is this
correct?

I would like to give an example of the steps I took in
creating this style. Please keep in mind this style is
embedded in a table. I will only give the first 3,
however, I did style all nine levels. Please bear with me
on this:

1. Create Heading 1 style with no number associated. Link
H1 style to Heading 1 in 'Link Level to Style' field.
2. Create Heading 2 style with number '1.' associated.
Link H2 style to Heading 2 in 'Link Level to Style' field.
Note: No Previous level number was available in
the 'Previous Level Number' field. Check 'Restart
Numbering after Level 1'.
3. Create Heading 3 style with 'a.' associated. Link H3
style to Heading 3 in 'Link Level to Style' field. Note:
No Previous level number was available in the 'Previous
Level Number' field. Check 'Restart Numbering after Level
2'.
Repeated similar formatting for each level up to 9.

I realize I have skipped a few formatting steps, but I
didn't want this to string out any longer than it already
is.

Does this sound like I have styled this properly? I tried
to follow the steps on Shauna Kelly's site.

Did you do all this in one operation, starting by going to Format | Style :
Heading 1: | Modify | Format: Numbering? You must go in through Format |
Style (not Format | Bullets and Numbering), and you must format the
numbering and link the levels to the styles all in one operation. You can go
back and tweak the formatting, but you must go in through Format | Style:
Heading 1 every time.
