Restart Page number

Jac Tremblay

I want to start or restart the page number to the desired number without having to use the Insert/Page Number command. This way of paginating a document is limitating and frustrating. It inserts a page number that floats over the text like the figures copied into a Word 97 document. It is impossible to apply a style to that number and one cannot position the number into in the text in a personnalized form like: "Page x of y" in the footer, for example

The correct way to paginate a document is to use the fields provided in different categories through the Insert/Field command. But in the last version of Word, 2003, it is no more possible, as far as I can see, to restart the page number to the desired number because the check box has been removed

In the help file, all they say is to use the Insert/Page Number command which does not help me at all. Is there a way to circumvent the proble

Why has this option been removed from the Word 2003 version

I use the French version of Word 2003 with Windows XP. My word documents have many sections (TOC, Table of figures, etc.) and a title page

Thank you

Do not use the Insert | Page Numbers command. As you say, this inserts the
page number in a frame. Although you *can* access it and change it (by going
to View | Header and Footer and clicking on it), it is not the best
approach. Instead, use View | Header and Footer to get to the header pane.
If you want page numbers in the footer, use the Switch Between Header and
Footer button on the Header and Footer toolbar. Use the Insert Page Number
button to put a number where you want it. Use the Format Page Number button
to access that dialog. For more numbering information, see
