Here's the code I get:
<html>

<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<title>New Page 1</title>
</head>

<body>

<p>
<!--webbot bot="HitCounter" i-image="5" I-ResetValue="15" I-Digits="4"
U-Custom="counter.gif" --></p>

</body>

</html>
I'm working with:
http://www.frontpagemvps.com/FrontPage/HowToArticles/tabid/67/ItemId/7/Default.aspx

"After you are satisfied with the look and alignment of your image, save the
image as a .GIF image. ****For the file name, use "Counter.gif" (without
the quotation marks).
**** After you create the image, import the image into your FrontPage Web.
To do this, follow these steps:
Open your Web in FrontPage.

In Folders view, make sure that your images folder is the open folder. If it
is not, click the folder in the All Folders pane to open it.

On the File menu, click Import.

In the "Import" dialog box, click Add File."

I didn't have an images folder so I made one. Would that hurt anything?
It's not working.

" In the "Add File to Import List" dialog box, locate the Counter.gif
file on your hard disk, select the file, and click Open.

In the "Import File to FrontPage Web" dialog box, click OK.
The file has been imported to your Web; however, you must add a counter to
your page."

I get it imported into the newly created images folder (see above) Yes, I
put the images folder onto the website on the net. Did that help or hurt? ;-)

"Click your page to place the insertion point in the location in which you
want the hit counter to appear.

On the Insert menu, click Component, and click Hit Counter.

In the Hit Counter Properties dialog box, click Custom Image.

In the Custom Image text box, type "images/counter.gif" (without the
quotation marks)."

I don't get to the "In the Hit Counter Properties dialog box, click Custom
Image."
I have to click/choose one of those shown and then click a box that says
custom image
It's not working. Can you help? Thanks.

It is unusual for an open FrontPage web to not have an images folder -
this folder is created (along with the _private folder) when the web is
created.

If the original folder has been deleted, then creating a replacement
will not hurt anything.

In the Hit Counter properties, the hit counter custom image should be
"images/counter.gif" (without the quotes) as the instruction said, yet
your code snippet shows only "counter.gif"

Check that you have the path entered correctly.

Thanks, Ronx, but.....

:
"the Hit Counter properties, the hit counter custom image should be
"images/counter.gif" (without the quotes) as the instruction said, yet
your code snippet shows only "counter.gif""
I added the slash but still shows up with an X in the box no .gif no
numbers.
Any ideas??

Hi, Ronx
In the images folder: NAME: counter.gif TITLE: images/counter.gif
In the Hit Counter Properties choice box I've selected the 4th one down
then I get the circle choice and click in Custom Picture and enter into the
dialog box:
images/counter.gif
Then I click box Reset Counter to 15
Then I click box Fixed number of digits and I make it 4
Then I click OK and in Design View I now see [Hit Counter] BUT in Preview
view only see the same [Hit Counter]

(when I use FP hit counters I get numbers in the Preview view)

AND in view in browser There's the Red X in the little box in the rectangle
that says, Hit Counter and no numbers.

(Should I upload it again as a tst? It didn't work last time I tried that.)

Don't be mad ... but I'm NOT giving up on this !! I'm going to do this
(right after I get the computer off the lawn and fix the window!)
I hope when I come back to learn how to make my own buttons (with picture
not plain.. plain I do) that it's NOT AS HARD AS HIT COUNTERS!)
Thanks again. Oh, here's the code snippet:

<html>

<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<title>New Page 1</title>
</head>

<body>

<p>
<!--webbot bot="HitCounter" i-image="5" I-ResetValue="15" I-Digits="4"
U-Custom="images/counter.gif" --></p>

???hmmm should the virgule be a back virgule instead of a forward virgule?

I just went through the steps and get the same code as you (chose 5th
option: "Custom Image" in Properties) in FrontPage code view.
In Design and Preview views, the counter shows as [Hit Counter]
In Preview in Browser it shows correctly - but I work on server based
webs so this is what I would expect, the counter will not work when
previewing from a disc based web.

I suggest you publish to the server and test.

PS - if the weather is as bad as here you will need waders to retrieve
the PC from your lawn, and make sure it is dry inside and out before
turning it on :)
