Restore backed up Outlook files

D

I copied my Outlook data files to an external drive before getting a new
computer. How do I get those files onto my new computer in Outlook? I have
my external drive hooked up but I get an error message saying it can't find
the file on my external drive. When I look it up on Windows Explorer it is
there.

Help!!!!!

Thanks,
Donna

Donna,

Perhaps first you could try copying the file from your external drive to
your hard drive.

Regardless of where the file is, the process should be to open Outlook,
right click the default Personal Files Folder, select "Open Outlook Data
File," and open the new file. You can then set the file as default and delete
the other one.

Doug,

Thanks for the help. When I do as you suggested (right click onthe Default
Personal Files Folder) it jumps down and highlights the Inbox but I get no
box on the side with other options to choose from. I started right clicking
on all the file folders and I never got the option to "Open Outlook Data
File". What am I doing wrong? Don't know if I mentioned - I have Outlook
2000 if that makes a difference.

Thanks,
Donna

Hi Donna,

Sorry, my suggestion would have worked for Outlook 2007, 2003, and probably
XP. I have actually never used Outlook 2000.

But, you can try this: Once you have the .pst copied to your new computer,
in Outlook, select File | Open, then look for something like "Outlook Data
File."

In Outlook 2000 and earlier, it is a "personal folders file."
