Restoring the Document imaging writer printer

U

Udi S.

Hello,

The "Document imaging writer" printer icon has gone missing from my computer.
My first action was to uninstall, then reinstall the component using Office
setup, but with no result. I've also renamed the MODI folder under \program
files\common files\microsoft shared and ran a repair installation to restore
it - again, with no result. the printer is still missing.

I've waded through literally dozens of similar newsgroup questions,
and in most cases a simple component reinstall seems to have resolved the
problem.

I should note that the "Microsoft document imaging writer port" is also
missing from under printers and faxes -> server properties -> ports

The computer has Windows XP SP2 installed, and Microsoft Office 2003 SP1.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

1. Close all running applications. If you have any Office application running, the driver will not be installed properly.
2. Go to "Control Panel" and "Add or Remove Programs".
3. Click on "Microsoft Office 2003" and then click on "Change".
4. Check "Add or Remove Features" and click "Next".
5. On the bottom of the page check "Choose advanced customization of applications." and click "Next".
6. Under Microsoft Office click on the + sign in front of "Office Tools"
7. Locate the object "Microsoft Office Document Imaging", click the icon and select "Not Available".
8. Click on "Update". This will uninstall the MODI driver.
9. Repeat steps 1 to 6 to go back to the same location you were before.
10. Locate the object "Microsoft Office Document Imaging", click the icon and select "Run from My Computer".
11. Click on "Update".

Once this is complete, you can go to "Control Panel" and then to "Printers and Faxes", if you see a printer with the name of
"Microsoft Office Document Image Writer" then the MODI (Microsoft Office Document Imaging) is properly installed.

Thanks Carey, but as I wrote, this was the first action I took (apologies if
I wasn't clear on that). That did not solve the problem and the printer and
port are still missing.

Any other ideas..?

(note - I also already ran an Office repair, and to make sure I the modi
component will be reinstalled, renamed the MODI folder)

Carey, I've tried the procedure below and am install having problems.
Microsoft Support wants to charge me $245 to investigate the problem, and
even then I have no guarantees of success. I see lots of people reporting
that uninstall/reinstall doesn't fix the problem. Has ANYONE found a
solution?

I hope that MS will find a solution: I am one of the "lots of people" waiting
-even if not writing till now- for having back a program that has been
already purchased and licensed (245$ to solve a MS
installation/disinstallation bugged procedure?!)

Hi Sasha,

Did you do perform the steps Carey suggested previously? (Only additional one would be, after completing step 8, restart the PC,
then check in your
\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ area for an
MODI folder, in some cases, renaming that folder before doing the 'add' of the MS Office Document Imaging feature set as
'available' may work.

Some folks have reported that renaming the MDIMON.DLL as described in this procedure first works
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911005/en-us

Others have reported that going to Start=>Printers and deleting the MS Office Document Image Writer and (if it's there) the MS
Office Live Meeting Writer and deleting those items before restarting the PC then installing the Office Document Image Writer will
work.

Be sure you're logged in as administrator when doing the install/delete, etc process.

The prices for paid support from MS (not all support requires payment) is available through the links on
