retreiving documents in word 2003

how do I open a win98/office2000 word document, from a cd ,in xp/office2003.
I've tried the obvious way. I have a dvd-rw drive and a dvd drive.
It's not recognising that there is a disc in the drive.

First, you do not open Office documents from removable media. Copy the file
to your hard drive and remove any read only attribute.

Second, if Windows XP is not recognizing a CD, the CD may be in UDF format
{packet writing}. Windows XP does not support UDF format. You need to add
third party software. Or, if you have access to the computer that the CD
was prepared with {or one with compatible software}, you could open the CD
and then close choosing the option to format so the CD can be opened on any
computer.
