Return Receipts ?Rule?

I would like to receive a return 'read' receipt from just a couple of my
contacts. I do not wish to receive one for everyone. Is there anyway I can
track these people automatically - without having to set this action each
time I send a email?

Not in current versions - it is an all or nothing setting unless you select
it per recipient.

Even if you could, many of us have our systems set to never return them. And
then there are the people who don't use Outlook - doesn't work for them.

I occasionally set an email for that but would never rely on that for a
completely accurate response for who read an email.
