Reviewing marks/codes

I am editing a document that when the 'show codes' button is pressed, there
are characters such as the following before a heading:
{PRIVATE}:HEADING 1{PRIVATE}
I don't have more details at hand, but I would like to get rid of them. When
I toggle the button, wherever my cursor is ends up somewhere else and the
layout changes. In other words, these characters do take up space when they
are displayed. Never saw that happen before.
Thanks,
Chas

This private fields come from very old documents (maybe Word Perfect):
MS Word can not recognise a part of that document and places
{private}.
You better just delete those fields, and if the document still has
strange behaviour: save it as rtf document, close it, open it, and
save it again as doc.
