Rollup task wrong

This may be a simple Project (rather than server)
question but I'll start here.

We have a group with three subtasks. The tasks have Work
of 16.5 hrs, 36 hrs, and 3 hrs. However, the rollup
header shows Work of 878.7 hrs. I have tried un-denting
(must be a good word for this) the three real tasks and
setting the Work to 0 hrs on the rollup (which is now
normal). When I then re-indent the lower tasks, the
extra hours are added back in. Can anyone give me a clue?

Thanks,
Scott

Well, it turned out to have a Resource Name in the rollup
task. Still hard to see how it came up with the result
it did. I also don't understand why the Resource Name
column isn't disabled as is the Work column. At this
point, if anyone understands this I'd love an
explaination but things are now working as expected.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Well, the Summary task summarises the result of its subtasks. You might be
mixing Duration with Work. Work comes with the assignment of a Resource and
is a measure of the estimated manhours for the task. Whereas, the Duration
is a measure of the working time available between the start and finish of a
task. Units of resource (Number of men) X Duration (number of hours) = Work
(manhours). The Duration of a Summary task is a measure of the working time
between the start of the first task and the end of the last task. Assuming
therefore that your 3 tasks are linked in a chain, entering Durations as you
detailed would give a Summary Duration of 55.5 hours. If you assign the
same resource to that (generally impossible to achieve as you are doubling
his working day) then Project will add another 55.5 hours to the duration
giving 111 hours of work, but the Duration will remain the same. Experiment
on a fresh project and insert a column for Work to see how Duration and Work
interact. You might also like to see FAQ Item: 5. Default Working Hours
