Is it possible that because it is a self-sign certificate that it is
People use self-signed certificate all the time.
I had no problem importing and using ours. That *shouldn't* be a
problem (in theory.....)

I tried to reset my keychain to factory defaults and start from the ground
up. The X509 stuff was not reinstated. I still had to manually add them
after.

I put the certificate back in and it still does not work.

Could it be something in the way the system was built in the first place?
Does OS X version matter?

Well I don't know how long ago was this scheme introduced, but it goes
back quite a while as long as I can remember. You could always make
sure the system is perfectly up to date (and considering all the
prebinding issues I read about these days, make sure you don't touch
anything or launch any app as the updater is "optimizing" the system),
