RPC Fail

I have been getting the RPC fail and my computer is
shutting down. I have Windows XP and have read about the
worm. I will be downloading the patch tonight because I
just discovered it. However, I haven't heard, does this
worm do any damage to your computer that I need to be
aware of?

From what I understand, Blaster Worm doesn't do direct
damage to your computer. I recommend going to sarc.com
(Symantec's Anti-Virus Research Center) and downloading
the fixer file. It's a small file that you'll have to run
once, and it will rid your computer of the worm. Then get
the Microsoft patch, which will fix the vulnerability that
allowed the worm to get in in the first place.

Have a look at

for a description of the virus.

It executes a DoS attack agains the Windows Update website - *after Aug
16* - but does little else besides. (Well - it also opens some ports, and
they don't actually know why...)
