RPC over HTTP - again..

Hi,

I have been searching for a resolution to this issue for well over a
week, and, although there are a whole heap of posts regarding this
issue, none of the 'fixes' have been able to solve my problem.

I installed Exchange 2003 SP1 on a Windows 2003 Server, and followed
the instructions given on the microsoft site kb833401.

The hostname of the server is MAIL, and the FQDN is mail.mydomain.co.uk

After following the Configuration guide step by step, I hit the issue
when configuring Outlook 2003 on the client PC.

The Client is based externally to the network on which the exchange
server resides.

I configured the client as follows:

Microsoft Exchange Server - mail.mydomain.co.uk
Cleared Cached Mode (as suggested in the guide)
Entered a Username for an account on the server
Cancelled the 'Check Name' when it failed.
Selected the connection Tab, Chose Connect using Internet Explorer's
Checked the connect using http box, and clicked Exchange Proxy Settings
Entered the url https://mail.mydomain.co.uk
Clicked Connect using ssl only.
Checked both 'On Fast Networks..' boxes.

Then, I tested by running outlook /rpcdiag

Outlook opens, along with the Connections box. There were two entries
in the connections box:

Server Name= ---, Type =Directory, Interface=blank, Conn= ---,
Status=Connecting and the others are blank.

Server Name= mail.mydomain.co.uk, Type= Referral, Interface=blank,
Status=Connecting and the others are also blank.

A login box is displayed, so i entered the details. After a short time,
the two entries in the Connections box disappeared, without changing
any of their fields, first the one with no name, then the
mail.mydomain.co.uk one, and after some time, a box was displayed
stating 'Your Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable' with Retry,
Work Offline and Cancel options below.

I cannot seem to find out where the problem is occuring as the error
doesn't give much of a hint. I am concerned that there is no mention of
http or https in the Connection box in outlook. It seems like it isn't
even attempting to use https?

One question I have is, at the client site, it is connected to the
internet via it's local LAN, so I presumed that I may need to select
LAN when choosing the connection type while configuring outlook, but
this issue is still exactly the same.

I have read about certificates causing problems, but cannot see what I
could be doing wrong with the cert, I created one from the server
itself, and chose to 'install certificate' when prompted from the
client PC. I have also tried pretty much all of the other suggestions I
could find regarding this issue, and cannot seem to get round it. Any
further Information can be provided, just ask.

Any help or pointers would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Gordon
