rpc settings, what is the correct one

This may sound dumb, but in many places I have heard about the "connect to
exchange via http" AND "connect to exchnage over the internet". Are these 2
different things or the same? This may help clear up alot of confusion.

Depends on the context on the discussion. For example I could say these
statements and they would be different.

1) In order to connect to exchange over the internet, you could establish a
VPN connection to the corporate backbone and configure Outlook like you
normally would in the office.

2) In order for Outlook 2003 to connection to exchange over the internet*,
you would need Windows XP (SP1) + specific patch or Windows XP (SP2),
Outlook 2003, and have the correct pieces on the server side.

* As you can see the magic statement is there, but we are describing to
different methodologies. One is a very traditional type connection when out
of the office (e.g. VPN) vs. an alternative if the site is Windows 2003 AD +
Exchange 2003 on Windows 2003 (RPC over HTTPS).

Guess I should ask, does this make it worse or better?

So within the Outlook 2003 software IF the requirements are met to use it
there should be a option that is "Connect to my exchange server over the
internet" which is different and seperate from "connect via http"

Then in your context either is acceptable. (e.g you here it refered to
either way)

As for the option, are you thinking the option should be listed where you
select the account type (e.g. Microsoft Exchange Server, POP3, IMAP, HTTP,
and Additional Server types)? The answer to this is no. One just select
Microsoft Exchange. You have to select More settings > Connection tab to
get at the option to use.

The other reason the bottom section of the dialog could be hidden is that an
administrative policy could be set to disallow its use.

ps - here is the screen shot of the dialog. as you can see the section is
titled Exchange over the Internet and the checkbox is listed as connect to
my exchange mailbox using http.
