RTF2 on report doesn't work

i seem to be the only dummy here
i have a rtf2 control on my report with the following control source
=[forms]![reportprinting].[notes]
which is also a rtf2 control
but all i get is "rtf2 control view design window"
interestigly enough the report's control GROWS according with the rtf text
in the form but the actual CONTENTS does not show up
please help
