Ruler measurement unit problem

I am using Word 2003. When I want the ruler to show
inches, I select Tools > Options > General tab, then
select inches under Measurements. After I click OK,
nothing happens to the ruler. How can I get the ruler to
display in inches (or any unit other than the default)?
