Rules imported from Apple Mail

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Email Client: pop I have just imported my apple mail into Entourage 2008. I have about 400 rules. They are all the same and that is when I apply rules....all my 'sent' emails get filed into various client folders.

The rules were imported from mail into the rule section called POP. when in Pop, it handles only outgoing emails and the rules need to be in the section called "Outgoing"

is there anyway to somehow move or transfer the rules? I cannot select all or cut and paste.

Hi Keith,

the Rules window is very inflexible, and you cannot copy/paste rules.

However, this unfortunate situation may be a good incentive to
reconsider your use of rules. In Entourage, for instance, you can create
outgoing rules based on a number of criteria, and these rules are
applied automatically when you send the message. In other words, there's
no need to apply rules manually to messages in the Sent Items folder.
You may know this already, but I thought I should mention it nonetheless.

You can base these outgoing rules on a number of criteria, such as
categories etc. When I mentioned "rethinking your use of rules", I was
referring to the fact that, with the many possibilities offered by
Entourage, you may be able to reduce the number of rules considerably.
If you need any help with this, don't hesitate to post back.

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps you can give me more details. My goal is to not have to 'hand file' these emails into the various folders that I have set up by individual clients. THere are days where I have 100 plus emails in my sent folder and it takes a long time to file them into the individual folders in Apple Mail or Entourage. So how could I create a rule (or some rules)...that can take the individual emails in the sent folder and properly file them? ANy ideas?

Hi Keith,

outgoing rules only apply to messages that are being sent. In other
words, if you create an outgoing rule, you cannot apply that rule to
messages that are already in the Sent Items folder. Only incoming rules
(POP, IMAP, etc.) can be applied to messages in a folder. I would not
create an incoming rule simply to perform some "housecleaning"; use the
search function in Entourage to find messages in the Sent Items folder
that correspond to certain criteria, then move them manually. Create
outgoing rules to make sure you'll never have to do that again; any
message you send will be processed by the outgoing rules and will be
sorted accordingly.

This is not the only solution, of course, but it is the one I would
recommend, even though it may imply a few hours of tedious manual
sorting. But remember: the use of Entourage's filter and search
functionality can assist you with this task.

when I apply rules....all my 'sent' emails get filed into various client
folders.

If I understand correctly, you like to file your sent messages in the
clients folder.

If your client list is always changing this is going to make an ever
growing number of rules with the possibility of problems.

Try this script. AFAIK it still works under Leopard and Snow Leopard.

File Reply in Same Folder X By: Paul Berkowitz

This script will save any reply you send out to the same folder as the
message to which you are replying. This is very useful when you have
different folders for specific correspondence.

Thoughts to consider....

1) At the top of each message there is a link to see reply. Using this,
all sent messages can remain in the sent folder and still be easily
accessible.

2) Using Links in Entourage might also be an option, but could be time
consuming.

3) Spotlight search in Entourage can quickly show all messages
pertaining to a client using “all messages” as part of the search.
