Rules stopped working

Some of my rules have stopped working. Outbound ones seem OK, but I'm having trouble with inbound ones.

I've rebuilt the database and have deleted rules and have made replacements, but the problem persists. These rules in question have been in place for years and I haven't had trouble with them until recently.

I've rebuilt the database and have deleted rules and have made replacements,
but the problem persists. These rules in question have been in place for years
and I haven't had trouble with them until recently.

Troubleshooting rules is very difficult. See this page for help:

Why Rules Don't Work <http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/rules.html>

If you can tell us exactly what is going wrong we might be able to offer
some suggestions on what to look for.

BTW, how many rules do you have? Screenshots help when it comes to getting
help.

You can post a screenshot link using a service like ImageShack. ImageShack
is an easy-to-use free media hosting service. It can be used to upload
images. Registration is not required in order to upload files.

ImageShack® - Image Hosting <http://imageshack.us/>

How To Post Screen Shots To Newsgroups

1. On your keyboard, press Command-Shift-4.
2. On your keyboard, press the space bar.
3. Click the window you want. A picture file will appear on the desktop.
4. Go to http://imageshack.us/.
5. Click Browse, then navigate to and select the picture file.
6. Click "host it!".
7. Paste the "Show image to friends" URL in a newsgroup message.

The correct URL is:
http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/4247/ruleswindowsf2.th.png

However, it appears that you didn't upload your image correctly, because the
URL you posted is a link to a very small image that is impossible to read.

To properly upload your image and get the right link, follow these
step-by-step instructions:

Go to <http://www.imageshack.us/>. There you will see a small, round ³radio
button² called ³upload² just below the orange bar that runs across the page
near the top of the page. It should already be selected (by default). Under
it, there is an oblong button called ³Choose File.² Select that (i.e., click
on it). Once you do that, a drop-down menu will appear that contains the
folders and files on your hard drive. At this point, navigate through the
folders and files on your hard drive until you get to the image file on your
hard drive that you want to upload. Select that file, and then click on the
oblong ³choose² button that appears at the lower right of the drop-down
menu. The drop-down menu will then ³go away,² and you will be back at the
page at <http://www.imageshack.us/> where you began, and you will see that
next to the oblong button called ³Choose File² that you had selected will be
the name of the file that you just selected from the drop-down menu. Then
simply go down towards the bottom of the page and click on the rectangle
called ³host it!² The words ³host it!² will then change to ³uploading...² as
your file is being uploaded to the ImageShack site. Once uploaded, ImagShack
will automatically open a new page with lots of ³stuff" ;) on it. On that
page, you probably will see a small copy of the image you just uploaded.
Lower down on that page you will see a bunch of different fields
(rectangular boxes), each containing a URL. To the right of each is a name.
Go to the one that says ³Show image to friends.² Click on the word ³Show² --
it¹s a ³hot link² that activates the uploaded image. Once you do that, you
will (finally) be brought to the page where your image is now located. Copy
the URL that appears in your web browser for that page. _That's_ the correct
URL to use in your newsgroup post.

I _assume_ you're responding to the second of my two posts...but I can't be
sure, as you've deleted the entire content before posting your response.

In any event, whatever you have done hasn't improved the result at all. I
mean, I _can_ get to something that's readable by mousing on one of the
images, but no one else will probably try to figure it out once they click
on the link you provided and find themselves staring at a page full of a
bunch of tiny, unreadable images. Really, you need to do it right so that
folks don't have to try to figure out what you did and how to get to a
readable result. So, you really should _carefully_ follow, _step-by-step_,
the detailed instructions I offered.

Had you done it "right," I _think_ this is what you would've ended up with:

I see two junk rules? What's that about? Can you open each rule and take
screenshots of the rules? The only junk rule you need besides the Entourage
Junk Mail Filter is one that catches junk "sent by me".

I don't know if you have seen this option.....Have you checked the Mailing
List Manager rules to see if you have accidentally set up a rule there?
Mailing List Manager rules run before other rules. If you are caught by the
MLM bug, all you need to do is delete that rule.

Jon, I'm not entirely sure but your subject is the exact same as another
poster so those of us that help and use a newsreader are getting the threads
mixed up. The Mactopia forum is an interface for NNTP. Every time someone
replies without quoting I have to go back and open all the old messages to
try and figure out what they asked and what replies were given. When there
are multiple users asking a same or similar question in the same thread it
starts to get impossible to help anyone or for anyone in the future to find
an answer.

If you use a newsreader rather than the Mactopia interface to this newsgroup
you can download old messages and search for answers. If you are not
familiar with a newsreader, Entourage's basic newsreader already has the
Microsoft News server included. All you do is subscribe to the newsgroups
you want. See this page for help:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/support_options/subnews.html>

These are the active newsgroups:

microsoft.public.mac.office
microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage
microsoft.public.mac.office.word
microsoft.public.mac.office.excel
microsoft.public.mac.office.powerpoint

One more try on the picture of the rules window:

Again, I _assume_ you're responding to my last post, but it makes life very
difficult for folks who just happen upon your posts when those posts are
isolated from the thread they refer to. You really need to reply so that the
entire pst you are replying to is quouted in the body of your reply.

As far as the "content" of your current post is concerned, all you seem to
have done is copy and paste the link that _I_ already provided to you.
What's the point?? Anyone reading the thread would've seen it already.

I _know_ that...I'm convinced you can do just about _anything_! ;) But I
also know that other folks are not as good as you. The only reason I'm "so
good" with ImageShack is because I used to use it a lot in the past, and
learned how to use it correctly only after stubbing my once-pretty toes all
too often. (I probably would've forgotten the details had I not saved the
"instructions to myself" that I had once created. :) )

J

Jon_in_Carmel

The two junk rules were to catch different issues that the filter wasn't catching. Shots are at <http://profile.imageshack.us/user/jwsapp/>. (note that i don't have anything against MS- spammers purport to be from there)

The other thread addressed a specific problem- email from "me" to "me. This is about rules not working at all.

Sue,
Jon is using the Microsoft web-based user interface to this newsgroup. That
interface automatically snips previous messages; it's not something that Jon
is doing.

Oh. Thanks for clarifying. I must say, however, that it's not something I'd
want to use (and I guess I'm too dumb to figure out why such an interface
would be offered to begin with)...it really makes it difficult (actually,
damned near impossible) to follow a thread.

We've been struggling with the Mactopia Forum debacle for a year now. We are
promised improvements, but I'll believe it when I see it.

First, it's unclear that this is not an official Microsoft forum. It's hard
to search and post a new question. This is why we have so many messages that
are hijacked. I can't say enough about the awful font sizes and colors they
use. Most of the volunteers that answer questions use a newsreader and
refuse to use the web forum. It's really not a forum so that's another
confusing matter to all this mess. The Office forum has not synced up to
NNTP since Sept 24. We don't see any of the questions asked on the forum so
no one is getting any answers.

I can say that the spam problem is just about totally under control now.
Whew! The new person in charge is working hard so I have hope more
improvements will be seen soon.

Now that the issues regarding the site have been hashed over, can I get some help on the problem that I posted about rules no longer working?

D

Diane Ross

Yes, I did, and tried them with no luck. I checked MLM issue and it didn't
apply to the problem. The rules used to work, and just stopped. Only 4, 8, 9,
and 10 work. the others don't.

And how are we supposed to know what rules 4, 8, 9, and 10 are? Did you
disable all then add them back one at a time to test?
