Running both 2004 & 2008

Hi. I have both Office 2004 and Office 2008 installed, mainly because I prefer the 2004 version but have to open a few 2008 Word documents every once in awhile. I frequently do not have Word open. I just locate my Word document, then click, and it launches Word. Alas, nowadays Word 2008 is what automatically opens. I need to change that to open Word 2004 automatically. Can someone send me the keystrokes to do that?

Hi Laura,

there is not much you can do here; once Word 2008 is on your Mac, it takes
over, i.e. it becomes the default application for Word documents. You can
specify Word 2004 on a per case basis for individual files by right-clicking
the files and choosing Word 2004 from the dropdown menu in the Open With
section of the Get Info window. Also, if you keep Word 2004 open, it will
open any Word documents and it will not activate Word 2008.

That being said: if you prefer Word 2004, and it is entirely up-to-date, you
can use it to open the new Office Open XML files. As a result, you are free
to uninstall Word 2008, since you do not use/like it.

I'm afraid that cannot easily be done... as long as you're double-clicking
icons in a Finder window OS X will launch the more current version unless
2004 is already running. The easiest options are:

1- Set Word 2004 to automatically launch on login, or

2- Drag the file icon to the Word 2004 icon in the Dock, or

3- Ctrl/Right-Click the file & select Word (11.5.5) from the Open With
options, or

4- Launch Word 2004 & use the File> Open command (Cmd+O)

BTW: Are you aware that you don't *need* Office 2008 in order to work with
files that are in OXML format? There is a free converter available from;

FB0-1CF7-4835-892D-A74FAE8D2F30#viewer>

The converter does not enable or support feature specific to Office 2008 but
that may provide all you require. It just depends on what you need to be
able to do once you open the file.

I wouldn't expect any change from either MS or Apple on this. It's a
relatively minor issue in the overall scheme of things & there are any
number of workarounds that don't require any effort on the user's part.
