Running Macros on a Excel spread sheet

I have recently purchased Word and have no knowledge of Excel.
I am trying to run Macro through a Excel Spread sheet, the run button is not highlighted and I can't proceed with this, why is this happening and can you explain what I should do? Thanks

What version of Excel and Word? Macros are not available in Office 2008.
