running office 2008 and word 2004 ...suddenly word 2004 won't open anymore

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

since the last office 2008 update, word 2004 won't open anymore. it hangs on project gallery and has to be force quit. opening document directly does not work either. ANY ADVICE?

prefer word 2004 because it runs more stable. word 2008 gives me lots of unexpected crashes, snail slow saves, scrambled display (you scroll down the page and suddenly the lines look jumbled, you scroll over it again and they look fine). entourage 2008 runs fine.

tried deleting word 2004 (with the 2008 remove office program) and reinstalling (using setup assistant)... same result. in fact, the setup assistant hung up on me couple of times before it finally worked. :(

grrr. i NEVER had any trouble on tiger with office 2004. nothing but headaches since i bought a macbook air with all the fixins and spent a fortune on office 2008 (because entourage 2004 did not run well on leopard)! but ... it IS a very light & convenient machine, that is why i have not thrown it out the window yet. :)

Eeeewwww......

I would suggest that the issue here is that you have two "partial installs"
and they are conflicting.

I would:

1) use the Remove Office for 2008 to remove 2008.

2) Use the Remove Office from 2004 to remove 2004.

3) Shut down the computer (all the way to power off).

4) Restart the computer, and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.

5) Do a Complete Install of 2004.

6) repair Permissions again.

7) Do a full Update of 2004 (fire it several times, until it stops offering
you things).

8) Repair permissions again...

9) Find and delete the Normal template and the Normal.dotx template. Empty
the Trash.

10) Do a Full Installation of 2008 -- DO NOT allow it to remove anything.

11) Do a full update of 2008. Again, fire it several times until it stops
offering you things.

12) Repair permissions one last time.

13) Do another power-off and restart.

Should be good now :)

Hope this helps

Damn! I knew I would blow it...

The new version of Normal is named Normal.dotm not Normal.dotx

Sorry about that...

Thank you John!
detailed instructions anyone can follow!
I will give that a try when i have a moment.
Right now i am using office 2008 only without big problems... perhaps the hangups and crashes were the fault of a corrupted file... keep the fingers crossed!

No, I got confused between .dotx and .dotm :)

Word 2008 does not DO ".dotm" because it has no macros, and that is the
macro-enabled template type. So all of Word 2008's templates are .dotx.

Except ONE :) The Normal template is a .dotm

I guess they did that so they wouldn't have to change it later when they
bought Macros back.

Cheers

Or perhaps the fellow in charge, accidentally wrote dotm instead of dotx
and knowing MS they just decided to leave it rather than fix it. ;-):p
...Or perhaps because 2007 uses .dotm?

No: I suspect they did this on purpose. Bob is correct: a Normal template
can contain toolbars and keystrokes, which are in the "Macros" container.

In a .dotx, these would be disabled. So we got a .dotm.

Cheers
