"running virus check" when opening any Office product

My office 2003 was running great, but now all of a sudden it takes at least a
full minute to open, and then equally as long to open any previously saved
document.
It really makes the programs non-usable. Has anyone had similar experiences
and maybe ideas how to fix it. A new install didn't help. Thanks

Indeed, I tried that. I completely disabled my antivirus software (AVG7.5),
and it still does the exact thing. The "running virus scan" is what really
sems to be hanging things up.

Also, I have it on my laptop as well, with AVG7.5 running and no problems.

Thanks for the response.

Remove and uninstall AVG7.5 COMPLETLY and then re-install it minus the email scanning option.

Disabling the virus scanner doesn't disable the DLL that is running the
virus scan. Search for avgoff2k.dll and if found, go to Start/Run and run:

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgoff2k.dll"

Note that you need to verify the location of avgoff2k.dll and if it's
different, modify the command accordingly.

Thanks for keeping me focused on the AV software. First I tried the
disabling of the dll to no avail. Second, I uninstalled AVG and reinstalled
without the e-mail scanner and also a no-go. I knew it was the AVG because
after I uninstalled Office programs worked lightning fast.

As I ws considering a different AV program, I decided to take one last look
at custom installation of AVG. I noticed a plugin for Office 2000/xp. I
chose not to install that and everything seems to be fine...and I still have
AVG (which I do like).

Thanks again for the tips. Your helps are much appreciated.
