runtime error in word

I am having trouble opening WORD. I keep getting the error message,

"RUNTIME ERROR!

Program: C:\Program files\Microsoft Office\Office10\WINWORD.EXE

abnormal program termination

This started happening recently with WORD and a few other programs as well.

Please advise what "RUNTIME ERROR" means and how I can fix this. Should I
just reinstall the program?
