RUP vs UML

Hi,
I am new to this industry and have been working as a Business Analyst
since the last 18 months. In this time, I have managed to understand
the processes in my company and also the basics of Business Analysis.
What I would like to discuss here is, can people who are in similar
roles, tell me how RUP is used in daily project management. So far, I
have been reading stuff like how it helps a project manager to manage
his project plans. But I am more interested in knowing if Business
Analysts use RUP and if so how? My main confusion lies in the fact that
there is simply too much terminology going around. Yes, I understand
and work with use cases and sequence diagrams and class diagrams etc.
But is this all part of RUP or is it just a case of me realizing that I
am already implementing RUP. The RUP talks about Phases, Iterations,
Workflows etc. But isnt this what we all do anyways? We define our
project based on the various phases it goes through, like an inception,
then the stage of elaboration the simple requirements to more granular
levels and then the solution specifications, design specifications and
so on. So what exactly it is that RUP promises to improve? Again, is it
all jargon? And how is RUP and UML interlinked? By now, some of you
probably understand my predicament. See if any of you can give me a
practical real life example out of your day to day work and help me out
of my ignorance.
I would really appreciate your responses.

Thanks
Dave.

I don't think that this the place to ask this question, but anyway..
RUP has a focus on software development and all the questions you ask are
answered in articles abouw RUP and UML.
RUP is based on UML and offers tooling and guidance for developers, but it
misses tools/guidance for the processes outside the pure development.

As another contributed mentioned, this is not the place for discussing RUP.
There are a number of good books at Amazon on RUP worth checking out.

If you post you email, I can correspond with you offline on the specifics of
RUP and project management.
