safari web page sent via apple mail to entourage - block submission

M

Michael Reynolds

... at this point, I'm just wondering what it is about a web page sent via
Apple Mail (great feature!) which causes Entourage to display the warning
"For your security, Entourage will block submission of this form"? ..

... in particular, what are the file types in this kind of message via Apple
Mail which need to be "allowed" in the Entourage Attachment Policy .plist?
...

... a side note - even the microsoft entourage support webpage dealing with
this issue sent via Apple Mail was blocked! ..

If the page you're sending has a <form> tag then Entourage will block
submission of that form. Best practice is to have a user come to your
website and submit the form there where it can be done securely.

This is not related to blocked attachments and cannot be altered.

Hope this helps!

William,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I suppose maybe I'm just not stating
this clearly, as I have a hard time believing I'm the only person
experiencing this issue.

Essentially, this is what I like to do. Say I see a recipe on Epicurious
which I like, or an article on the NY Times website. Safari/Apple Mail
allows me to send a copy via Mail. Then I can save/view the recipe/article
in Mail/Entourage (and not have to open/search for them with another
program). Entourage, however (and NOT Apple Mail), most of the time (not
always) gives the messge below. Almost seems like a proprietary issue
between Apple Mail and Entourage. So I'm just wondering if there is a
particular file type Entourage is blocking?

No, Entourage is not notifying you that it's blocking a file. It's
telling you that it's blocking a *form*.

If you go to a website that has fields on it such as Name, Address,
Phone number, etc., followed by some button to "submit" that information
to the website, then you're submitting a "form".

Many mail applications today, including Apple's Mail and Microsoft
Entourage, can display the same type of HTML in your E-mail. In other
words, someone can send you an E-mail message that has Name, Address and
Phone number fields and that mail message can contain a button for you
to "submit" that form to the website.

Entourage blocks *submission* of this type of form for security
purposes. This is a security issue because when you're on a website then
you should be submitting that form over an encrypted connection. Neither
Mail nor Entourage can provide this encryption.

The danger here is that you may receive a message from "PayPal", which
is really a phishing message from a scammer. He may try to trick you
into entering your PayPal name and password into the message as a "quick
way to log in to your account". What you're really doing is sending your
confidential name and password to the scammer.

You're not being blocked from actually seeing any of the mail message.
You're only being blocked from sending potentially confidential
information through Entourage.

Hope this helps!

I know you mentioned you wanted to use Entourage, but you should check out
Bare Bones Yojimbo. It's absolutely great. You can select to archive a web
page from a link in the browser and the entire page is saved. You can assign
tags to it and search is super easy. They have a free trial.

FYI, Bare Bones makes BBEdit.

Otherwise, try doing a copy paste of the recipe and when you paste into an
Entourage message use HTML instead of plain text.

As long as we're mentioning alternatives... ;-)

I love MacGourmet Deluxe
<http://www.marinersoftware.com/sitepage.php?page=130> for storing my
recipes. It has the same tagging features as Yojimbo but makes entering
and importing recipes very easy. It even has a direct import tool for
the Epicurious website too.

My favorite feature is that it syncs to its iPhone counterpart. I
literally have all my recipes on my iPhone all the time and can search
it at work. Then I can stop by the store and get the ingredients.

FWIW, they also make the free successor to BBEdit Lite called TextWrangler.
