Hello all
I have a user when in Microsoft word-XP, the "save as" and "print"
buttons do not work correctly. Uninstalled the software and reinstalled
with no luck. Any ideas to resolve without having to re-image this
machine? Thank you.

Has Word (or Office) been activated?

It is a corporate account so I do believe it is activated. And in
talking with the other tech who advised me of the problem, he states
that the other tools (excel, powerpoint) are working just fine. Not sure
where to go from here, but your help is appreciated. Thanks

Hm. I can't think of anything, really. What exactly does "not work
correctly" mean, though? Does the user get an error message when he tries to
save as or print? Does it act like it's going through the motions but
nothing happens?

Oh, does this happen with all files, or just one specific file? If it's just
one, maybe there's a password on the file or something.

Does the corporation use Information Rights Management? If so, I'd guess
it's possible this user doesn't have correct permissions listed.

Spoke with my counterpart and he is saying that when he moves the mouse
over thos 2 buttons and presses, nothing happens. They dont depress or
anything. the rest of the buttons work as they should. Not sure if
this one is quick but I think he has given in and will schedule a
rebuild, for the clients sake anyways. If you can think of anything
else, it is appreciated. Thanks for your time with this one.

I can't think of anything else, wieck. It sure sounds as if some kind of
protection or rights or permissions or something is at play here, but I
don't know what it would be.

Might be worth a call to MS.

It could be a third party application has intercepted the built-in
commands. See if the same issue occurs when you start Word using the
/a switch. For this go to Start/Run and use the following command:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

If you can use Save As and Print then chances are the problem is one
of the following:

Global template/add-in: Go to Tools/Options/File Locations and note
the location of the Startup folder. Exit Word and locate the Startup
folder and see if any files are placed in the folder. If more than
one, move them one at a time and try starting Word after each file is
moved out of the folder until you determine which one is causing the
problem.

To determine if you are using any global templates go to
Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there are any global templates
or add-ins listed. If so they are located in one of your Startup
folders. The location of the Word\Startup folder can be found under
Tools/Options/File Locations and the Office\Startup folder can be
found in the Office installation path..

Take a look in each folder and if you find more than one file move
them one at a time and try duplicating the error after each file is
moved out of the folder until you determine which one is causing the
problem.

COM Add-in: As of Word 2000, Word can have COM add-ins. COM are added
via the Registry rather than the Startup folders. To determine whether
or not you are using COM Add-In you can add the "COM Add-in" command
to your toolbar:

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice
- Close the Customize dialog
- Click the COM Add-ins command and see if any add-ins are listed.

If so, disable them one at a time so you can determine which one is
causing the problem.

For more information on COM Add-Ins, see this article:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm

Normal template: Locate Normal.dot and rename it to OldNormal.dot.
Word will create a new one upon starting.

If this resolves the problem, any customizations can be copied to the
new Normal.dot via the Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins) Once
this is complete OldNormal.dot can be discarded. If the problem still
exists then you can delete the new Normal.dot and rename your
OldNormal.dot to Normal.dot.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.
