Save As Screen Too Big

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel When I try to save a document in Word, the SAVE AS screen is way to big. I do know the basics of how to make a window smaller. I cannot get to the bottom right-hand side of the window to resize it. Nor can I get to the top to shrink or stop with a different colored buttons. The way this occurs is when I go FILE, SAVE AS,and then push the little triangle to open the screen. In fact, I cannot get back to little triangle. It is like this one window was designed for a much larger screen. This is very frustrating. Unfortunately, I am traveling and do not have the ability to reinstall Word from my source desk at this time. Eventually, if I find no other solution that is what I will do.

Please let me know your thoughts on how to fix this. And thank you in advance for your help.

Hi LMP,

with Word and the Save As screen open, launch System Preferences, go to
the Displays settings and change the screen resolution to a smaller
setting, such as 800x600. The Save As dialogue should now resize
automatically to fit the new screen resolution. Once it has done that,
switch back to your default screen resolution.

Hope this helps.

.... And for future reference: Avoid the temptation to follow the Windows
methodology of 're-installing' every time something appears to go wrong :)

Mac OS is a completely different platform, and although reinstalling may be
a quick & easy fix when dealing with simple individual apps like TextEdit,
it's the worst thing you can do when dealing with complex apps - especially
those that are a part of a suite.

I understand & have tried the the solution offered below to no avail. So, I am looking for alternative ideas.

"with Word and the Save As screen open, launch System Preferences, go to

I do appreciate the suggestion.

Try Michel's suggestion again but without having the Save As dialog open...
Change the resolution, then try File> Save As & see if you can resize the
dialog. If so, reset the resolution. Sometimes it helps to try several
different resolution settings, including higher than normal if available.

Also, make sure you have OS X fully updated... 10.6.3 was just released, but
even if you've already applied it by way of Software Update it might be a
good idea to visit the apple site to retrieve the Combo updater. The Combos
are more comprehensive than what SU delivers. (Dialogs such as Print, Open &
Save As are generated by the OS, not by the app calling for them.)
