"save as" slow when choosing another folder in Office 2003?

When I choose "save as" for a document and try to choose another folder to
save it to, it locks up and says "not responding" but if you wait it allows
you to choose a new folder.
I see this in Office 2003 on a variety of computers using Windows XP
Professional.
Other people have reported the same behaviour to me.
What is happening and is there a way of fixing this behaviour?

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.

Did this. showed no other mapped drives in use. did not help. Any other
ideas?
