"Save As" wants to rename file in Folder

In Office 2003, XP, I am having fits doing a "Save" with a new document or
"Save As" in a modified document.

When I try to put the file in an existing folder, it wants to rename the
file with a name that already exists and replaces the name I'm trying to give
it. I can overwrite the correct file name, but it is quite an irritant. Any
work around or setting I need to change? Thanks!

I'm not sure if I follow what is happening exactly. If you use Save As, type
a file name in the File Name text box, are you saying that after you click
Save the file name is automatically changed? If so what are some of the file
names it's using?

Does the issue still occur if you start the application in Safe Mode? Exit
the application, hold Ctrl and start the application. Continue holding Ctrl
until you are prompted to start in Safe Mode.

Additionally, if you can narrow this down to one application, or if it
happens on all of them, pick one for further troubleshooting and let us know
in your reply. Thanks!

Thanks Beth. Even with Word (Office '03) in safe mode, the problem continues.
I'm probably doing a lousy job of explaining it!
I hit "save", and name the file. When I go to save the document to an
existing file folder, it "picks" one of the names already existing and then I
have to go through the process of naming the new file all over again. Did
this clarify, or make it worse? Thanks!

Sounds like you have set Windows to "one click open" which causes a
"point to select". Go to Windows Control Panel, Folder Options and
change Click Items to "Double Click....."

That absolutely "fixed" the issue, although the single click option was
apparently the default on my Sony Vaio Office 2003/XP. We have two identical
laptops and both of them had the issue.
Searching the Office Online site didn't point me in the right direction. You
did! Thanks.

Glad to hear you're back in business. Since it is symptom caused by the
"user settings" in the operating system, I suspect that's why it wasn't
in Office Online.
