Is there a way to change the calendar's appearence before publishing as a
web. I have successfully managed to publish two calendars but do not like the
color scheme that gets published.

Is there a solution?

you'll need to change it after publishing. Edit the css file (and make a
copy for backup) then it as read only and it shouldn't be overwritten the
next time you publish it.
