Save as webpage + SVG = trouble

I am having trouble when saving a Visio file as html. The Visio file contains
50-something pages; the “front page†is a world map with spots to click,
which brings you to one of the other pages. So far so good.

I want to save images as .svg (the zoom-function is nice!), and in the first
versions of my project it worked fine. But then, after a while (adding new
pages etc); when I opened the html file I got a message saying “This page
requires an SVG viewerâ€.

I can still open an early project version, and get nice svg graphics; so
it’s not that my IE is missing a svg viewer.

What’s going on? What should I do? (btw I’m using Visio 2003 standard).

Any hints or help is greatly appreciated!

I think that you have turned off the alternate image output, and you are
seeing that in your previously saved HTML project. If you have a Vista
operating system, I don't believe you have an SVG viewer, since I
understand that the Adobe viewer for SVG does not work on Vista.

When Visio saves to SVG and VML formats, it can also create alternate
images in a 'down level' format that allows others without SVG/VML viewing
capability to see the pages. In my case, I created a large drawing, with
59 pages, and saved it using the SVG format as primary, and GIF as
secondary. I can see the output on all OSes that I have (Win2003, Vista,
WinXP). When I create a second output, turning off the alternate GIF
output, I can no longer view the HTML created on my systems, as I don't
have an SVG viewer.

To try this option setting, follow these steps when saving to HTML:
1. File > Save as Web Page
2. Select folder and file name, click Publish button
3. Select the Advanced tab
4. If the check box 'Provide alternate format for older browsers' is not
checked, place a check in the box, and choose from the format options (GIF,
JPG, PNG)
5. Click OK to create the output.

If the box was unchecked, then only the SVG output was created, and not the
alternate format. You should be able to see the alternate format in any
browser.

Visio does not include an SVG viewer, although it can read and create SVG
format files. There's a list of SVG viewers online
(http://www.svgi.org/directory.html?type=1), which I found by starting at
the W3C.Org website. I understand that the Adobe company viewer does not
support Vista, by the way.

Just to be clear - Visio's Save as Web Page function created the SVG files,
and you can see them in the folder containing all of the htm and other
files that were output. I believe that you have been seeing the alternate
format, or perhaps had SVG viewing installed by some other application
which has been removed from your system.

Hope that helps!
