Save Normal Template

In Word 2002, I have Options>Save, Prompt to save Normal template, checked.

Every time I quit Word it asks if I want to save changes to Normal, even
when I have not knowingly changed any styles, etc.

What would be changing Normal every time?

Thanks.

Hi John,

Typically a global template/add-in is the cause. Some add-ins are not
designed properly and the modify the Normal.dot each time Word starts.

To determine if you are using any global templates go to
Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there are any global templates
or add-ins listed. If so they are located in one of your Startup
folders.

The location of the Word\Startup folder can be found under
Tools/Options/File Locations and the Office\Startup folder can be
found in the Office installation path..

Take a look in each folder and if you find more than one file move
them one at a time and try duplicating the error after each file is
moved out of the folder until you determine which one is causing the
problem.

Do you move any toolbars or buttons?

Have you added or deleted any icons on the standard toolbars?

Are you creating any new autotext or autocorrect entries?

Have you changed your default tab settings or default font?

Have you written any macros and saved them in the normal template?

If you are certain sure you have made no changes to normal.dot that
you want to keep then as a rule of thumb always say NO to this
message. Otherwise you might get some surprises when you least expect
it. If you don't have prompt to save normal ticked then Word will
save it anyway (probably not a good idea) Somehow always saying NO
seems like the best way after all!

No files in the startup folders.

started Word, not opened a document file, and then immediately quit Word.

Is it "normal" for Word to do this? Why does Word "think" I have changed
something? What could be changing?

Hi John,

It could be caused by a COM Add-In. COM Add-ins are added via the
Registry rather than the Startup folders. To determine whether or not
you are using COM Add-In you can add the "COM Add-in" utility to your
toolbar:

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice

I've found some COM Add-ins do not display in this list. As another
check go to Help/About Microsoft Word and click System Info. On the
left navigate to: Office 10 Applications\Microsoft Word 2002\COM
Add-ins.

If you find any in the System Info list but not in the COM Add-in
utility in Word then check your Control Panel in Add/Remove Programs
to see if it's listed and uninstall it.

Beth:

I removed the Microsoft Works Suite Add-In, as it showed up in the COM
Add-In.

Thanks so much for your help. If you ever have questions about old houses or
historic preservation I'd be pleased to respond.

Yup, the Works add-in is the worst for dirtying Normal.dot and causing other
nasty problems.
