save not responding

very funny things are happening to my version of word
2002 on xp.
it won't open documents, saying they are in use and read-
only, then gets stuck when you click on read-only.
sometimes it says word cannot open existing "square
symbol.
sometimes it says autorecovery postponed for normal.doc.
sometimes it opens the file and then stops responding
when you press save.

excel also gets stuck when you press save and outlook is
perpetually frozen on message one of 92 on send and
receive.

i've updated all my sophos virus definitions and nothing
is coming up as infected

please help. yours in computer despair,

Try working through
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm. Most likely this
will solve the Word problems. The "cannot open the existing <square>"
problem is reported for Word 97 in "WD97: Word Fails to Open 'Cannot Open
the Existing <Square>'" at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=189439; you
might have a look and see if that is relevant to your version.
