save/open causes word to freeze

Since this afternoon, I have a serious problem with Word (Office 2003). I can
open Word by itself and open documents in Word via My Documents, but then
once in Word with a document open, if I hit 'open' or 'save' or 'save as,'
Word freezes after I click a location to open from or save to. The only way
to get out of it is to close the 'open' or 'save' box and then choose the
option to end the program and send an error report. The error report suggests
that I download the Word update, which I did to no avail.

My boyfriend was using Word all morning and SAYS he didn't do anything
unusual...but who knows!

I've tried downloading Word AND Windows updates, restarted about a dozen
times, updated my virus definitions and so on, but that's where my knowledge
runs out. Any ideas? Suggestions? I'm close to panicing as I am very near the
final stages of my thesis, which of course I'm doing in Word.

Read the other posts in the newsgroup. Your problem is caused by the
update that Microsoft installed via automatic updates. Your boyfriend
is innocent and deserves a full pardon (make-up sex will suffice). To
fix the problem, remove update KB908531 (can do this in control panel
add/remove software, IF you check "show updates"). If you have
automatic updates turned on, however, it will continuously reinstall
itself. There is a better fix described in MS KB918165, but the
instructions there require using Regedit and may be beyond your abilities.

Thanks. It is a long registry key to input, so I reccomend copy/paste
for those who need to apply this. But, that said, it worked like a
charm.
