Save to mapped drive fails - tmp files

Word 2000 users saving to mapped drive on Win2000 are
getting these messages. In addition, tmp files are not
deleted for the document when this occurs.
"Windows was unable to save all the data from the file
\DriveName\WRD***.tmp. The data has been lost. This
error may be caused by a drive failure or network
connection."

"Word did not save this document. Word cannot complete
the save due to a file permission error. The ssave failed
due to out of memory or disk space."

There are no error messsages in the server event log. We
only have 8 users, all with new XP machines with plenty
of memory. Word can save to local hard drive and gives no
errors. Users have administrative rights to both their
workstations and the mapped drive. Deleting the tmp files
sometimes helps, but not for long. The users have two
database programs that also access the mapped drive and
these do not experience any operating or saving
difficulties. Ping to server from workstations shows
optimal network speeds.

I have searched all over the Knowledge base, MS
newsgroups and Google groups: lots of people post these
error messages, I can't find anyone with a solution.
Please help.

Word hates mapped drives. Open Tools, Options, File Locations tab and make
sure that all network paths are set using UNC addressing. Then find
Support9.dot (usually in the macros folder under Office or if not, it will
be on the installation CD) and run the macro install from the template. One
of the macros is to force Word to use UNC addressing.
