I am unable to save a document and get the error message "the save failed due to out of memory or disk space" and of course I have plenty of memory.

Well, what quantitative value can you supply in place of the arbitrary term
"plenty"? And how much free disk space do you actually have? Are you saving
to your HD or some other device? If not your HD, what? Any network involved?

Regardless, that error is typically misleading :) It more commonly suggests
a permissions issue, so the first thing I'd suggest is that you make sure
Office is fully updated (12.1.5), then run Disk Utility - Repair Disk
Permissions as well as Verify Disk. Proceed accordingly if any errors are
found. Other utilities such as Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro can be used
instead of Disk Utility if you have one.

If that doesn't resolve it - or if the report indicates no errors - try
running Word in a different User Account. Does the error persist there? If
not it indicates that the problem lies with the original User Account.
