saving a document in FP

V

Has anyone had a problem when making a change to a page within FP and then
when trying to save it you get a message saying FrontPage cannot save this
document because a file with the same name exists at this location. When you
click ok it brings up the save as dialog box and if you try to save with the
same name it will ask if you want to overwrite it and if you click ok, it
will not let you. Kind of a catch 22.

I've seen it happen if you try to save a page like thispage.htm as
Thispage.htm

I am trying to save index.htm and I cannot unless I rename it to something
else, like index1.htm. I then have to go and delete index.htm and then rename
index1.htm to index.htm. Dosen't make much sense to me as I only recently
started having this problem.

this is a long shot...but take a look on your server and see if you have two
index pages up there.

and try Steve Eastons FPCleaner utility:
http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm

not sure if these will help, but it'll keep you busy for a while till the
next suggestion comes along :)

I checked that and there is only one. I have also checked to make sure the
read only attributes is not set. The page does have a picture gallery on it
and I can add a picture and it saves the new .jpg, just will not save the
actual page without saving to a different name. Once I do that and then
delete the orginal and do the rename it works. Must be some underlying FP
thing.

Ask you web host to run a check on the extensions and/or check the permissions for your account.

Would this be a factor since I am not logged into the remote host? I usually
do all the changes locally and then publish at a later time, which seems to
be ok.

Not if you are having this problem locally and are working with a disk-based web (c:\...)

Also try running a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks to se if that corrects your FP Meta data

Could this possibly be the problem. I have been working on different machines
and copying the site from machine to machine by using a USB device. I was
looking at the vti_cnf file and I noticed that author is different than the
modyfied by. Is it possible that when trying to overrite this that there is
an issue regarding permissions?

Copying is the problem. You need to publish between machines.
