saving and recovering files

In a moment of fatigue I started to save a file I had worked on for
some time (with autosave enabled every 10 minutes), but decided to
save it under a different name and carelessly clicked the "don't save"
button instead. Is there any way to recover the file?

If you have Norton FileSaver installed on your machine, you have a chance to
find it through Norton Unerase: the Temp files can sometimes be found and
recovered that way.
