I want to save a document as a .pdf file but don't see it in the "save as"

You need to buy a copy of Acrobat (full version, not the reader). There are
also some freeware/shareware clones that are OK for some purposes. But test
them first if you need the PDF for commercial printing.

Thanks Jezebel, but I am interested in saving a Microsoft Word document as a
..pdf file. Does that require buying a copy of Acrobat?

You either have to buy the full verion of Acrobat, or do a search in Google
for Free PDF and try some of the free offerings.

There is no function built-in Word to save to pdf. Acrobat is the obvious
choice but it is expensive. There are cheaper options available from links
on the Favourites page of my web site.

Bear in mind that some of the freebies won't work for some purposes. There's
at least one that crashes if you use anything but TrueType fonts -- doesn't
matter for most purposes, but in some situtations you *must* use Adobe Type1
fonts.

If you have a commercial objective in mind (such as creating copy for
insertion into a magazine) it's worth running a test.
