Saving document fails due to document being open

I have a suite of macs that when a user clicks save, they get the following message:

"Word cannot save this file because it is already open elsewhere"

The only way around this is to "save as" and rename the document which for a school, is starting to eat up storage space.

Does anyone have advice based on this problem?

Thanks

Hi Carlo:

There are two things you need to check: The Unix ID of the user, and if
you're using a Windows server, the Account that owns the root of the file
system share.

Each user needs an individual unix ID, otherwise the server thinks the same
computer has the file open multiple times. The share must be owned by a
user other than the workstation user, otherwise the file never gets
released.

Details here:

Hope this helps
