Saving documents on network resource "there has been a network or file permission error"

I have read numerous postings along the same lines but none of the
solutions seem to solve the problem.

Basically, MS Word is used to create RTF documents on a network
resource which can be editted at a later date. The documents create
fine and the first time they are saved there are no problems, however
if they are subsequently editted and a save is attempted the following
error occurs

"There has been a network or file permission error. The network
connection may be lost (filename)"

Sometimes attempting the save two or three times works, other times an
"out of memory" error occurs and the user is prompted to save it as a
rescued documents.
Using WordPad to open/edit/save the document gives no problems at all.

All PCs are running Windows2000 professional with MSOffice97 sp2 and
the network resource is a Windows2000 server. The server is also
running Sophos Intercheck and I have tried variations of switching it
off/on/excluding folders and still the problem remains. We were hit
by the LovegateV virus a couple of months ago - not sure if that would
have had an impact on Word normal.dot templates?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as i'm at the end of my
tether with it !
