Saving In Excel

B

Baffled!

I have been using Excel for many years and feel that I am rathe
proficient but this error message has been very confused ... I wa
working on a file at home and when I sent it to a friend .. he receive
an error message
".....xls cannot be acccessed. The file may be read-only, or you ma
be trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the documen
is stored on may not be responding."
In order for my friend to open this file .. I had to save each shee
separately as "excel 4.0 worksheet" and not the workbook ... we bot
are running WinXP with Excel 2000 ... Can someone explain why this i
happening ?? and how to correct it ?? I update this file weekly fo
my friend and this week was the only time this error occurred. Thank

I've seen this when you save to a CD-R and then restore.
The read-only bit is turned on by most software in copying
to a CD-R (notable exception is XCOPY unless you want it on).

See http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/backup.htm#readonly

One solution would be to Use Find, or select a folder then select
all files (Ctrl+A), then properties, then uncheck Read-Only checkbox.

There are other ways that a file can be read-only, as indicated
in your message, and others as well which I don't know if
they turn on the read-only bit in the file. So you might want to check the
properties of the file first to see if it actually indicates read-only.
