Saving in Japanese text

Why can't I save Word docs using Japanese text? When I try to save it says

Your file could not be saved with the file name provided.

Some of the characters in the file name could not be recognized. Try saving
again with a file name that does not contain extended characters such as
Unicode characters.

AFAIK, the only way to make this problem go away is to upgrade to Word
2004. Until then, you'll have to save with an English name, and then
rename the file in the Finder.
