Saving PDF as Word documents

I need to compare two pdf documents. I save them as Word documents and they
convert without spaces between the words in the text. What am I doing wrong?
Is there a setting in Word that needs to be changed?

How are you saving them as Word documents? (If using Adobe Acrobat
Professional... what version?)
