saving .ppt files from websites

I have a problem saving powerpoint files from websites. If i click on the
link, the slideshow will open in internet explorer instead of allowing me to
download the presentation source. i know it is possible to download the
source because it works from the same website on a friends computer. How can
I adjust my settings so that I can download a presentation file to edit it
instead of opening it in internet explorer?

Right click (instead of double click) on the link. Then choose the option
"Copy to Folder" or "Save Target As" to download the file to your computer.

That was the first thing I tried, but from the java script site I am using it
doesn't work.

This is a great idea. I ran into a couple slides where the person who
created them made the text boxes so narrow that they did not show up in edit
view--it looked like they weren't even there--but they were visible in slide
show. Having autofit for a textbox would have prevented something like this,
which was very confusing.
