Saving projects is taking up to an hour

Hello,

Any ideas on why it would take nine minutes to save a 300-task project?
Another user is experiencing save times approaching an hour, and he's running
dual 1-gig processors and 1/2 gig of RAM.

Thanks,

Chuck

The client-side machine probably doesn't have anything to do with it.
The critical questions are what kind of network connection do you have
with the server(s), and what kind of machine(s) do you have running on
the back end?

Steve:

I don't think the back-end hardware is the issue either, since it's sized by
a reputable Project Server consultant for our enterprise roll-out and it's
been fairly well load tested. Also, the 300-line / 9-minute save was done on
a weekend when the load was minimal.

Can there be anything about the nature of a project that would cause such
slow response? I've read that having enterprise resources in a project who
are also in multiple administrative projects is one characteristic that can
lead to slow save times.

Thanks for your reply,

Chuck

Chuck -

That is an identified issue and Microsoft warns about it in their
guides. If you have, for example, five Microsoft admin projects in
addition to the 300 task project, that could make a difference. But an
hour to save sounds too long.

As Mark says, this is also a possibility.

Another identified issue is the use of WAN links with avg. latency
times over 30ms, although it doesn't sound like this is your problem.
Is the server on your LAN?

Is this a problem with only this particular project, or is the problem
more widespread? What is your consultant's take on this issue?

Is the problem only reproducible for these two users, or can all users
reproduce similar behavior?

Is the first user experiencing 9 minute save times only on the weekend,
or at all times? Conversely, is the second user experiencing hour-long
save times at all times?

Hi Gary,

Where can one go to find how to troubleshoot performance in Project Server
2003. Is there a guide or site that you know of that will help?

Thanks.
